This vintage Japanese netsuke depicts a reclining komainu, a mythical guardian associated with protection.
The figure is carved in a compact, rounded form, with a broad muzzle, powerful paws and decorative details in the mane and body. The warm brown tone and visible wood grain give the carving a natural character.
A clear himotoshi with two openings can be found underneath. This allowed the netsuke to be attached to a cord and worn above the obi of a kimono.
A characterful little netsuke combining Japanese symbolism and traditional woodcarving.
