Ueno Ware / Agano-yaki (上野焼)
Ueno Ware, also known as Agano-yaki (上野焼), is a traditional Japanese ceramic style from Fukuoka Prefecture. Its origins date back to the early 17th century and are closely connected to the Japanese tea ceremony.
A defining feature of Ueno Ware is the combination of refined forms, a light body and expressive glazes. Unlike unglazed ceramics such as Bizen ware, the glaze often plays a central role in Ueno Ware. It can flow, drip, shine or subtly shift in colour, giving each piece its own sense of movement.
Many Ueno Ware objects have an elegant yet powerful appearance. The shapes are often sober and well-balanced, while the glaze adds depth, contrast and life to the surface. This gives each piece a quality that feels both functional and sculptural.
In vases, this character becomes especially visible: the balance between form, weight and glaze makes them suitable not only as vessels for flowers, but also as independent art objects within an interior.Enter your text here...
