This compact wooden Daruma has a bold, almost graphic presence. The face is built up from strong black brushwork, pronounced brows and a broad beard, while the warm natural wood remains visible throughout.
The front bears the character 寿 (kotobuki), a traditional Japanese auspicious symbol associated with long life, prosperity and celebratory good wishes. Combined with the familiar Daruma symbolism of perseverance and resilience, it gives the piece a strong positive meaning.
Its solid wooden form differs from the well-known papier-mâché Daruma and places it within the tradition of wooden Daruma-kokeshi. The contrast between natural wood and black decoration gives the object a restrained but striking character.
The underside bears a handwritten maker's marking. The maker could not be identified with certainty from the available signature, so no unconfirmed attribution has been added.
