Vintage Ōuchi Dolls by Nakamura Mingeisha | 4.5 cm

This small vintage pair of Ōuchi dolls (大内人形) was made by Nakamura Mingeisha (中村民芸社) in Yamaguchi, a workshop with a long tradition of producing Ōuchi lacquerware and dolls.

The pair consists of a male and female figure with the characteristic rounded form and glossy lacquer finish of Ōuchi dolls. Black and warm red are combined with delicate colourful and gold-toned accents. Despite their small size, both figures are beautifully detailed.

Ōuchi dolls are traditionally made as a pair and symbolise harmony, togetherness and marital happiness. Their history is closely connected to the Ōuchi clan and the traditional Ōuchi-nuri lacquer craft of Yamaguchi.

This set is beautifully complete with its wooden storage box, black display base and original Japanese shiori from Nakamura Mingeisha.
