This vintage Japanese Kamakura-bori hand mirror is crafted from deep reddish-brown lacquered wood and features carved relief decoration on the reverse.
The surface is fully worked with the characteristic rhythmic carving associated with traditional Kamakura-bori cabinets and other everyday objects. A stylised botanical motif forms the decorative focal point on the back of the mirror, while warmer reddish-brown tones remain visible beneath the darker lacquer finish.
The mirror was made in the tradition of Kamakura-bori (鎌倉彫), in which the wooden surface is carved first and subsequently finished with lacquer. This creates the characteristic combination of relief, visible carving marks and deep red-black tones.
With its elongated handle and richly decorated reverse, this hand mirror is both a functional object and a characterful example of traditional Japanese lacquerware.
