This compact Japanese cabinet has a distinctive presence, defined by its deep red-black finish, bold relief carving and large floral composition extending across both drawers.
The front features a stylised peony surrounded by broad leaves. The design continues across the line between the two drawers, creating one uninterrupted composition. The top and both sides are also fully worked with a rhythmic pattern of rounded carving marks. The reddish-brown undertones visible between the darker areas enhance the depth of the carved surface.
The cabinet was made in the tradition of Kamakura-bori, in which a wooden base is carved and subsequently finished with layers of lacquer. The visible carving marks, pronounced relief and contrast between reddish-brown and almost black are characteristic of this Japanese craft tradition.
Behind the richly decorated exterior are two drawers in natural wood. They provide space for jewellery, letters, sewing accessories or other small personal belongings. The simple black handles complement the cabinet's dark and graphic appearance.
Based on its design, fittings and finish, this piece most likely dates from the second half of the twentieth century, possibly around the 1970s during the Shōwa period. As no maker's mark or original documentation is present, this dating remains a careful estimate.
