Vintage Kamakura-bori Cabinet | Five Drawers | 32.5 cm

This vintage Japanese cabinet stands out for its stately form, five spacious drawers and the large peony extending across most of the front.

The floral composition continues over four drawer fronts, with broad leaves bringing the design together as one powerful whole. The upper drawer was kept more restrained, allowing the carved flower to take centre stage. The black handles blend discreetly into the dark lines of the design.

The top, sides and drawer fronts are fully worked with a rhythmic pattern of rounded carving marks. Warmer red tones remain visible within the deep red-black finish, adding depth and definition to the surface.

The cabinet was made in the tradition of Kamakura-bori, in which wood is carved and subsequently finished with lacquer. Its five natural wood drawers provide space for jewellery, documents, letters, accessories or other personal belongings.

This characterful cabinet dates from the Shōwa period, bringing together bold floral decoration, dark lacquer and traditional Japanese craftsmanship.
