Vintage Kamakura-bori five-Drawer Chest | 32 cm

This vintage Japanese Kamakura-bori chest features five drawers and is finished in deep reddish-brown lacquered wood with the distinctive carved surface associated with this traditional Japanese craft.

Decorative floral and foliage motifs in relief extend across several of the drawer fronts. The deeply carved designs contrast beautifully with the dark red and black lacquer tones, while the textured surface gives the chest a rich and lively character. Simple metal handles provide a restrained finishing touch.

Kamakura-bori (鎌倉彫) is a traditional Japanese lacquerware technique originating in Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture. Unlike Chinese carved lacquer, the wooden surface is carved first and then finished with layers of lacquer, creating the characteristic combination of relief carving, deep colour and visible chisel texture.

With five drawers, this chest offers practical storage for jewellery, correspondence, small collectibles or personal objects, while its substantial proportions and deep lacquer finish give it a strong decorative presence.
