This vintage Japanese shikishi (色紙) was hand-painted by Morio Takahashi (高橋盛雄, 1917–2000), a traditional Kokeshi craftsman from Naruko in Miyagi Prefecture.
At the centre is a traditional Kokeshi with an understated expression and a striking black and red head decoration. Two large floral motifs in red and green form the body. The free brushwork and bold areas of colour give the composition a lively and distinctive character.
Morio Takahashi belonged to the Naruko-kei (鳴子系) tradition. He was the eldest son of Kokeshi craftsman Sakari Takahashi (高橋盛) and learned woodturning and Kokeshi painting from his father. After the Second World War, he returned to Naruko and continued the family craft.
The calligraphy on the right reads 福島市 中合デパートに於て, meaning "at Nakago Department Store in Fukushima City", connecting the shikishi to a specific location where Takahashi was present.
The shikishi shows visible age-related spotting and discolouration, particularly around the edges, as shown in the photographs.
