This vintage Japanese shikishi (色紙) was hand-painted by Eihiro Sato (佐藤英裕), a traditional Kokeshi craftsman from Togatta in Miyagi Prefecture, associated with the family workshop Ushizoan (丑蔵庵).
At the centre is an expressive depiction of a traditional Kokeshi. The face is rendered with delicate black brushstrokes, while the head decoration and body are built up from bold motifs in red, black and dark green. The free brushwork gives the composition a lively and distinctive character.
On the left is the calligraphy 丑蔵庵 – Ushizoan, the name of the family workshop, with a red seal below. A second red stamp appears in the upper right corner.
Eihiro Sato was born in 1951 and learned the craft within his family. He trained under his grandfather Ushizo Sato (佐藤丑蔵) and his father Fumio Sato, later continuing the tradition of the Ushizoan family workshop. His work therefore forms part of a Kokeshi-making tradition passed down through several generations.
On this shikishi, the characteristic forms and brush motifs of the Kokeshi craftsman are preserved not on turned wood, but directly on a traditional Japanese shikishi board.
