This vintage Japanese shikishi (色紙) was hand-painted by Hashime Takahashi (高橋一, 1918–2002), a renowned Japanese artist known for his creative Kokeshi.
The composition depicts a pair of stylised Kokeshi rendered in soft, spontaneous brushwork. Their rounded forms, delicate expressions and colourful garments evoke a traditional hina couple, representing the emperor and empress displayed during Hina Matsuri, Japan's Girls' Festival celebrated annually on March 3.
The work is signed はしめ – Hashime in the lower right corner and accompanied by a red artist's seal.
Hashime Takahashi was born in Sendai in 1918 and began producing creative Kokeshi in 1953. He developed a distinctive and playful artistic style and received several important awards during his career. In 1967 he received the Prime Minister's Award at a national Kokeshi exhibition, and in 1996 he was recognised as a Miyagi Outstanding Skilled Worker.
This shikishi reveals another aspect of his work, transferring the soft expressive lines and characteristic forms of his Kokeshi directly onto a traditional Japanese shikishi board.
The shikishi shows light age-related wear and discolouration, including minor damage to the lower right corner, as visible in the photographs.
