This traditional carved wooden Noh mask represents a young female figure and bears the maker's name Ryōzan (龍山).
In form and expression, the mask clearly belongs to the family of young female Noh masks, probably close to the Waka-onna / Ko-omote type. Without additional documentation, however, we would not assign a definitive subtype.
The face is delicately and quietly rendered, with narrow eyes, high-set eyebrows and a small red-painted mouth. Its pale complexion, fine hairlines and subtle asymmetry create the calm and elusive expression characteristic of female Noh masks.
An important quality of Noh masks is the way their expression changes with light and viewing angle. A slight tilt can make the face appear softer, more melancholic or more animated. This ambiguity is one of the defining aesthetic qualities of female Noh masks.
The reverse bears the carved maker's name 龍山 – Ryōzan, together with an additional inscription that appears to read 七十春作之. This may be interpreted approximately as "made in his seventieth spring," possibly referring to the maker's age at the time of creation. As the identity and life dates of this particular Ryōzan could not be securely established, this interpretation remains cautious.
The carving, painted surface and presentation suggest a date in the second half of the 20th century, probably ca. 1960–1985.
The mask comes with its original wooden storage box, where it rests on a dark purple fabric lining. The traditional attachment cords are also present. The box bears a Japanese designation for Noh mask (能面).
A refined and atmospheric example of Japanese performance art, where expression emerges not from movement of the face itself, but through form, light and subtle shifts in perspective.
