This vintage Japanese set depicts Ebisu and Daikokuten, two of Japan's Seven Lucky Gods.
Daikokuten is recognised by his lucky mallet and symbolises prosperity and abundance. Ebisu carries a fish and is associated with commerce, good fortune and wealth.
The rounded wooden figures were shaped on a lathe and painted by hand. Their natural wood grain remains visible beneath the black, yellow and red details. Both figures are signed underneath by Matsutani Shinkichi (松谷伸吉).
A charming and symbolic pair combining Japanese folk art and traditional woodturning.
