This vintage creative kokeshi by Hakuho Usuki (薄白峰) is entitled "Umedō" (梅童), literally suggesting a "plum blossom child."

Its elongated form is kept simple, while the decoration is much more expressive. The body is finished in a deep warm red and decorated with large stylised plum blossoms, while fine reddish-brown lines and small floral accents frame the natural wood head.

Closed eyes and a tiny red mouth give the figure a calm, gentle expression. The contrast between the restrained form and rich floral decoration gives this kokeshi a distinctive character.

The title relates directly to the motif. Ume, the Japanese plum blossom, is among the earliest flowers to appear each year and is traditionally associated in Japan with resilience, perseverance and the approach of spring.

This example comes with its original box, which bears the inscriptions All Japan Kokeshi Competition (全日本こけしコンクール) and Minister of International Trade and Industry Award (通産大臣賞), confirming that the Umedōdesign received this distinction.

The underside bears the handwritten signature 白峰 – Hakuho. A Japanese commemorative inscription is also present on the reverse of the body.
