This large transitional Kokeshi was created by Kawamura Shōji (川村正治). His work sits at the crossroads between the traditional Kokeshi of Miyagi and Sendai and the freer design language of later creative Kokeshi.
Standing 45 cm tall, this Kokeshi has a strong sculptural presence. Its warm reddish-brown colour, natural wood grain and elegant bamboo decoration form a beautiful contrast with the understated expression.
The underside bears Kawamura Shōji's handwritten signature together with a red maker's seal. An original gold label is also still present on the body, although its text is no longer fully legible.
Also available in a smaller 30 cm version by the same maker. The two Kokeshi pair beautifully together, creating a balanced and natural composition.
An impressive vintage piece combining regional tradition, natural wood and a more decorative approach to Kokeshi design.
