This traditional Zao Takayu Kokeshi was made by Tanaka Atsuo (田中敦夫, 1938–2003), a craftsman associated with the Zao Takayu tradition of Yamagata.

The kokeshi has a compact rounded form, with a generously proportioned head and a short, slightly flared body. Warm natural wood tones are combined with deep reds and dark green accents.

The body is decorated with large red floral motifs and green foliage. Red decorative elements also appear around the head, while the finely painted face, with black lines and a small red mouth, has a calm and friendly expression.

Tanaka Atsuo trained under Saitō Genkichi and began producing kokeshi in the late 1950s. His work belongs to the Zao Takayu-kei, a traditional kokeshi lineage associated with the Zao Onsen area of Yamagata.

The underside bears the handwritten maker's name 敦夫 – Atsuo.

At 15 cm tall, this is a compact example. Its broad proportions, substantial head and rich decoration give it a strong visual presence despite its smaller size.
