This monumental traditional Kokeshi was created by Satō Yoshimitsu (佐藤義光), a craftsman associated with the Tōgatta tradition of Miyagi.
Standing 61 cm tall and weighing more than 4 kg, this Kokeshi has a particularly strong presence. Its long, slender body is decorated with a rhythmic pattern of stylised black leaves. The natural wood grain remains visible, creating a warm contrast with the restrained decoration and calm expression.
The Kokeshi stands on a separate wooden base. Both the underside of the Kokeshi and the base bear the same handwritten signature, 佐藤義光, directly confirming the maker. A Japanese presentation inscription on the front of the base includes the date 昭和五十七年, corresponding to 1982.
Satō Yoshimitsu learned woodturning from his father, Satō Kichinosuke, and is documented within the Tōgatta-keitradition. He later continued his work in Sendai.
An exceptionally large and characterful Kokeshi combining traditional craftsmanship, natural wood grain and a personal history.
