This vintage Japanese shikishi depicts a striking Tōgatta kokeshi with an elaborate, almost crown-like floral decoration in red, yellow, grey and black. The serene face contrasts beautifully with the bold brushwork and expressive floral forms surrounding the head and body.
The work is signed 遠刈田 六郷満 – Tōgatta, Rokugō Mitsuru. Rokugō Mitsuru (六郷満, 1931–1999) was a traditional kokeshi artisan of the Tōgatta school. He learned woodturning from Wagatsuma Kichisuke and later devoted himself closely to older Satō Matsunoshin forms, becoming an important continuation of that tradition. (kokeshiwiki.com)
The composition translates the characteristic visual language of Tōgatta kokeshi into a strong graphic work on shikishi board, with floral decoration at its centre.
Dimensions: approx. 24 × 27 cm
