This vintage Japanese shikishi depicts an elegant Tōgatta kokeshi, painted in bold red, black and soft blue-green. Floral motifs form much of the figure's body, while separate flowers to the right give the composition a light and playful character.

The work is signed 広井政昭 – Hiroi Masaaki. Hiroi Masaaki (広井政昭, 1935–2019) was a traditional kokeshi artisan associated with the Tōgatta school. From the 1960s onwards, he studied earlier Tōgatta forms closely and became particularly respected for his refined interpretations of historic Satō Matsunoshin designs. Kokeshi Wiki

Hiroi was also an important maker of Edo koma, traditional wooden spinning tops and toys. His exceptional woodturning skills and strong decorative sense earned him recognition well beyond the world of kokeshi. Kamei Museum

The board shows warm discolouration and light traces of age, consistent with its vintage character..

Dimensions: approx. 24 × 27 cm
