This special "Shōfuku" (招福) set was created by Sato Kōson (佐藤幸尊), one of the relatively few female artists associated with the sōsaku Kokeshi tradition.

The two rounded figures combine natural wood with bold accents of black, red, white and green. Their bodies feature expressive calligraphy referring to 招福 – shōfuku, an expression meaning to invite or welcome good fortune. Their open, smiling faces give the pair a warm and optimistic character.

A playful feature of the design is that the heads rest freely on the bodies and can be turned in different directions. This allows the relationship between the two figures to change with their positioning — facing one another, looking away or standing side by side.

What makes this set especially appealing is how completely it has survived. Alongside the two kokeshi, it includes the original box, wooden display base, nameplate and extensive Japanese documentation. Among the papers is an original promotional newspaper supplement dated 14 October 1998, presenting the Shōfuku Kokeshi in detail. It discusses the origins of the design, its inspiration from kendama, its role as a regional product of Koori and the symbolism of the dolls' broad smiles. The reverse contains original workshop information and a route map for Kōson Kōgei.

Additional documents include calligraphic texts and information referring to the registered design and the different sizes in which the Shōfuku Kokeshi were produced.

A playful yet richly documented set in which Kōson's graphic style, humour and symbolism come together beautifully.
