This set of two traditional Yajirō Kokeshi comes from Shiroishi in Miyagi Prefecture, an area with a long history of kokeshi craftsmanship.
The two figures clearly belong together, yet each has its own character. One is restrained in black and natural wood tones, while the other is more colourful, with accents of red, green and purple. Their large softly rounded heads and delicately painted faces are characteristic of the Yajirō tradition.
Yajirō Kokeshi originated in the village of the same name near Shiroishi. This regional style is known for its colourful decoration, turned rokuro lines and wide variety of painted patterns and forms.
The set is accompanied by a Japanese information leaflet from Kokeshi no Mise Kikubun (こけしの店 きく文) in Shiroishi, explaining the local Yajirō tradition.
No individual maker has been identified.
