This vintage Japanese shikishi from 1977 depicts a stylised Sakunami kokeshi with a gentle expression and lively floral decoration in red, soft green and yellow. Flowers largely form the body of the figure, while a separate floral motif to the right balances the composition.
The work is signed 平賀謙一 – Hiraga Ken'ichi and bears red seals. Hiraga Ken'ichi (平賀謙一, 1943–2007) was a traditional kokeshi artisan from Sakunami in Miyagi Prefecture. He trained under his father, Hiraga Kenjirō, and began producing kokeshi under his own name in 1968. His work belongs to the Sakunami tradition.
The inscription records 五十二年 九月 – September of year 52, corresponding here to Shōwa 52, September 1977.
Dimensions: approx. 24 × 27 cm
