This vintage Japanese shikishi depicts a distinctive Nuruyu kokeshi, painted in black and grey with a small red accent at the lips. The calm expression, broad hairstyle and central flower give the work a restrained yet strongly graphic character.
The work is signed 温湯 佐藤善二 – Nuruyu, Satō Zenji. Satō Zenji (佐藤善二, 1925–1985) was a traditional kokeshi artisan of the Tsugaru school and a representative of the Nuruyu tradition in Aomori. He trained under Mori Hidetarō and continued working within the distinctive visual language of this regional kokeshi tradition.
The bold brushwork and floral decoration reflect that heritage beautifully. The board shows noticeable discolouration and age-related spotting, all part of its vintage character.
Dimensions: approx. 24 × 27 cm
