“Mushin” – Creative Kokeshi Set by Masao Watanabe | 29 & 20 cm

This creative kokeshi set by Masao Watanabe (渡辺正雄) is entitled "Mushin" and consists of two figures forming a quiet parent-and-child composition.

The rounded heads and small, almost closed eyes give both kokeshi a calm and gentle expression. Their bodies are finished in warm earthy tones with a pronounced textured surface that contrasts beautifully with the smoother natural wood of the faces.

A simple white cord motif around the lower part of each figure creates a subtle graphic accent and visually connects the pair. Their difference in size further enhances the sense of closeness between the larger and smaller figure.

The title "Mushin" (無心) refers in Japanese thought to a state of mind free from distraction and preconceived thought. That sense of simplicity and stillness is beautifully reflected in the restrained character of the set.

Together, the two kokeshi form a warm sculptural composition centred on form, texture and quiet presence.
