This "Mushin" (無心) kokeshi by Masao Watanabe (渡辺正雄, 1917–2007) has a distinctly serene presence. Its simple rounded head and almost closed eyes contrast beautifully with the richly textured, rustic body.
The surface of the wood has been worked into expressive abstract patterns, combining different natural wood tones. A white sash around the waist adds a striking accent. Together, the textured surface, warm patina and understated face give this kokeshi its distinctive character.
The name Mushin refers to a pure, unclouded mind, free from distraction and ego. Watanabe was an important figure within the Creative Kokeshi movement and received several honours for his work, including the prestigious Prime Minister's Award.
The underside is signed and stamped by the artist.
