This large traditional Hijiori Kokeshi was made by Sato Minosuke (佐藤巳之助, 1905–1977), a recognised craftsman within the Hijiori tradition.
The kokeshi has a tall and slender cylindrical body in natural wood, richly decorated with large red floral motifs and green foliage. The strong colours contrast beautifully with the visible wood grain, creating a lively yet distinctly traditional appearance.
The substantial rounded head is simply but expressively painted, with black hair, delicate facial features and red accents at either side. A dark green neck section creates a striking transition between the head and body.
At 41 cm tall and weighing 1,747 g, this is a substantial example. Its elongated proportions give it an elegant decorative presence, while the oversized head adds the strong visual character seen in other large works by Minosuke.
Sato Minosuke learned woodturning from his father Sato Shūsuke and later worked in Sendai, where he continued to make and further develop traditional Hijiori forms.
The underside bears the handwritten maker's signature of Sato Minosuke.
As Minosuke died in 1977, this piece necessarily predates that year and belongs to the Shōwa period.
