This large creative kokeshi by Yamanaka Sanpei (山中三平) immediately stands out for its striking proportions: a broad rounded head set above an exceptionally long and slender body.
The decoration is built up in horizontal bands of natural wood, deep brown-black and warm red. Small gold-toned flowers appear between the darker bands, adding detail without disturbing the calm rhythm of the design. The natural grain of the wood remains visible throughout and forms an important part of the piece.
The face is equally restrained. Two small dark eyes and a simple hairline are enough to give the figure a quiet, almost contemplative expression. The broad head and narrow neck enhance this character further.
At approximately 42 cm tall and weighing around 2 kg, this kokeshi has a much stronger physical presence than a smaller tabletop piece. It reads almost like a wooden sculpture and works particularly well as a standalone object in a quiet interior.
The combination of minimal form, natural wood tones, red and black bands and delicate floral accents is characteristic of Sanpei's creative approach.
