This large vintage creative kokeshi by Kishi Sadao (岸貞夫, 1932–1998) is entitled "Shiori" (しおり).

The figure has an elegant elongated form, with the warm natural grain of the wood remaining clearly visible. Fine abstract incised motifs are scattered across the body, while a small group of white blossoms near the base adds a restrained decorative accent.

The face is minimal, with closed eyes and a quiet expression. A small dark hair element at the top and the rounded forms of the head and shoulders reinforce the calm, almost contemplative character of the design.

The Japanese word shiori can mean a bookmark or a marker for a place to which one returns. That understated meaning fits beautifully with the quiet vertical composition of this kokeshi.

At 36 cm tall, this is a particularly substantial example. Its elongated silhouette, warm wood and restrained decoration give Shiori a very different character from the more colourful creative kokeshi of the same period.

The underside bears the red maker's seal of Kishi Sadao.

Kishi Sadao is recognised as an important maker within the post-war creative kokeshi movement and received major awards for his work. We deliberately do not attribute the Prime Minister's Award directly to Shiori, as this could not be securely confirmed for this specific design.
