This vintage Japanese shikishi features a striking kokeshi portrait in a highly minimalist composition. The face is defined almost entirely by broad black brushstrokes, closed eyes and a tiny mouth, with a bold red hair ornament providing the only strong colour accent.
The simplified design and visible brushwork give the piece a modern, almost abstract quality. A red artist's seal appears in the lower left corner, although the maker could not be identified with sufficient certainty.
A restrained yet expressive work in which just a few confident brushstrokes create an instantly recognisable kokeshi face.
Dimensions: approx. 24 × 27 cm
