This colourful creative kokeshi by Hosaka Torao (保坂虎男) is entitled "Kasuri" (かすり).
The figure wears a striking deep-red kimono decorated with white graphic motifs referring to kasuri, a Japanese textile technique in which patterns are created by resist-dyeing threads before weaving. Black, pink and green accents in the obi add further contrast to the design.
The large rounded head, short fringe and black hairstyle with a red hair ornament give the kokeshi a distinctly retro character. Small eyes, delicate lashes and a subtle red mouth create a soft and friendly expression.
At 25 cm tall and weighing 610 g, this is a substantial example. Its full form, rich colouring and clear textile reference make Kasuri one of Hosaka Torao's particularly recognisable designs.
The underside bears the maker's stamp.
