This extra large traditional Tsuchiyu Kokeshi was made by Watanabe Chūzō (渡辺忠蔵, 1921–2008), a documented kokeshi craftsman from Tsuchiyu Onsen in Fukushima.
The exceptionally elongated body is decorated with fine red, green and dark horizontal bands. Compared with the bolder brushwork of the matching Asanosuke example, this kokeshi has a more refined and rhythmic use of line.
The face has open eyes and a more graphic structure, while the large dark area across the top of the head and subtle variations in the body decoration give the piece a distinctly Tsuchiyu character.
Chūzō worked within the traditional Yamaneya lineage and produced several established Tsuchiyu forms. His work is closely connected to older regional models and the characteristic linework of the Tsuchiyu tradition.
At 61 cm tall and weighing over 2.6 kg, this is an unusually large and visually striking example of his work. The underside bears the maker's signature.
