This impressive traditional Tsuchiyu Kokeshi was made by Watanabe Kazuo (渡邊和夫, 1940–2005), better known as second-generation Asanosuke (二代目浅之助).
At an exceptional 60 cm tall, this kokeshi has a very different presence from the smaller pieces more commonly associated with the Tsuchiyu tradition. Its long cylindrical body is decorated with bold red and green areas combined with rhythmic linework characteristic of Tsuchiyu kokeshi.
The face has a gentle, friendly expression with closed eyes and a subtle smile. Broad red brushwork and vivid green bands give the piece a lively yet strongly graphic character.
Watanabe Kazuo studied older Tsuchiyu forms and continued the style of Sakuma Asanosuke as second-generation Asanosuke. His work belongs firmly to the traditional Tsuchiyu lineage of Fukushima.
The underside bears the maker's signature.
