This extra large vintage Shingata Kokeshi by Kiyohara Takao belongs to the modern kokeshi tradition and combines a traditionally inspired form with a freer and more decorative design.
The elongated body combines warm natural wood tones with deep red sections and fine horizontal lines. A large red and black floral motif extends across the centre, breaking up the slender silhouette and giving the piece a strong graphic presence.
The head is equally distinctive. Broad black areas of hair with red accents frame a friendly face with closed eyes and a small mouth. The combination of a simple cylindrical form, bold floral decoration and graphic linework fits well within the Shingata style associated with Kiyohara.
At 44 cm tall and weighing over 2.5 kg, this is a substantial piece with an impressive physical presence. Its size and solid construction allow it to work beautifully as a standalone sculptural object.
The underside bears a handwritten maker's signature consistent with documented signatures of Kiyohara Takao.
Comparable signed Shingata Kokeshi by Kiyohara are generally dated to the 1960s–1970s. Without a dated box, label or inscription, this remains an informed estimate.
