This impressive vintage duo consists of two extra large creative kokeshi clearly designed as a pair.
Both figures have a strongly elongated silhouette with a narrow flared base, a dark-stained central body and a warm natural wood head and neck. Their restrained design relies mainly on the contrast between pale wood and the deep brown tones of the body.
Although closely related in form, each figure has its own character. One wears a tall black headpiece, while the other has a more elaborate hairstyle with a decorative red accent and a delicate patterned detail. Together they form a beautifully balanced pair without being completely identical.
At almost 60 cm tall, these kokeshi have a very different presence from standard-sized sōsaku pieces. They read almost as a pair of slender wooden sculptures and are especially striking when displayed together.
The original Japanese description refers to the duo as meoto kokeshi (夫婦こけし), literally a kokeshi couple or married pair. Both pieces are unsigned and the maker could not be identified.
