This impressive traditional Hijiori Kokeshi was made by Sato Minosuke (佐藤巳之助, 1905–1977), a recognised craftsman within the Hijiori tradition.

At 46 cm tall and weighing 2,308 g, this is an unusually substantial example. The long cylindrical body is richly decorated with large red floral motifs and green foliage, while the warm natural colour of the wood remains clearly visible.

The large rounded head creates a strong contrast with the slender body. Black hair, a red ornament at the side and finely painted facial features give the figure a distinctive yet gentle expression. Its considerable size gives the piece a strong sculptural presence.

Sato Minosuke learned woodturning from his father, Sato Shūsuke, and later worked in Sendai, where he continued to make and further develop traditional Hijiori forms.

The underside bears the handwritten maker's signature of Sato Minosuke.

As Minosuke died in 1977, this piece necessarily predates that year and belongs to the Shōwa period.
