This creative kokeshi by Sansaku Sekiguchi bears the title "Dōjo" (童女), a Japanese term referring to a young girl.
This is a larger version of the well-known Dōjo design. The broad, deep black hairstyle forms an almost architectural frame around the small face and creates a striking contrast with the warm natural tone of the wood. The barely indicated eyes and tiny red mouth give her a calm and understated expression.
The body is finished in deep brown and greenish tones and decorated with finely carved, gold-coloured floral motifs. The restrained kimono-like form, graphic hairstyle and delicate decoration give the piece a highly recognisable character within Sekiguchi's work.
The underside bears the red 三作 seal, Sansaku Sekiguchi's maker's mark. This example does not include a wooden nameplate or other original accessories.
At 20.5 cm tall and weighing just over 1 kilogram, this larger version has a particularly substantial and sculptural presence.
