This impressive Chigozakura (稚児桜), "Cherry Blossom Child", was created by Watanabe Masao (渡辺正雄, 1917–2007), a recognised name within Japan's creative Kokeshi movement.
At 45.5 cm tall and weighing an impressive 2,509 g, this is an exceptionally large version of one of Watanabe Masao's best-known designs. Its elongated silhouette, substantial weight and restrained finish give the piece a particularly strong sculptural presence.
The face is softly and minimally rendered, with narrow eyes and a small red mouth. The dark glossy hair creates a beautiful contrast with the warm natural tone of the wood.
The long body is finished in deep black and reddish-brown tones. Subtle red accents refer to sakura, the Japanese cherry blossom, a motif closely associated in Japan with beauty, impermanence and the fleeting moment of full bloom. The dark finish and restrained decoration give the piece a quiet yet powerful character.
The underside bears both calligraphy and a red maker's seal.
Chigozakura is one of Watanabe Masao's best-known designs. The model received a Prime Minister's Award in 1963and later developed a remarkable cultural connection with The Beatles. An example of this design was presented to the band during their visit to Japan in the 1960s, which led to the model becoming internationally known as the "Beatles Doll."
This example is in excellent vintage condition, with the painted decoration and finish particularly well preserved.
