This vintage Chigozakura (稚児桜), "Cherry Blossom Child", was created by Watanabe Masao (渡辺正雄, 1917–2007), a recognised name within Japan's creative Kokeshi movement.

At 30.5 cm tall, this example has the distinctive elongated silhouette associated with the Chigozakura design. The softly understated face is framed by glossy dark hair, while the slender body shifts from warm reddish-brown tones into almost black.

The decoration is deliberately restrained. Deep red accents appear through the dark surface and refer to sakura, the Japanese cherry blossom. Together with the natural variations in the wood, they give the piece depth without overwhelming its simple form.

Weighing 879 grams, this version retains an elegant, slender appearance while still feeling substantial and sculptural.

The underside confirms both the title 稚児桜 – Chigozakura and the name 渡辺正雄 – Watanabe Masao, together with a red maker's seal. The outer rim also bears the handwritten notation "1988.12". This may refer to December 1988, although it cannot be established with certainty whether this represents a production, purchase or later annotation date.

Chigozakura is one of Watanabe Masao's best-known designs. The model received a Prime Minister's Award in 1963and later developed a remarkable cultural connection with The Beatles. An example from this series was presented to the band during their visit to Japan in the 1960s, leading to the model also becoming internationally known as the "Beatles Doll."
