Creative Kokeshi by Yuji Kawase | 16.5 cm

This compact creative kokeshi by Yuji Kawase has a soft, rounded form and a warm, colourful presence.

The small face with closed eyes and a subtle red mouth is framed by finely painted hair. The body is decorated with a lively pattern of overlapping leaves in red, green, yellow and deep earthy tones. The different areas of colour almost flow into one another, giving the surface a playful, painterly character.

The simple form allows the decoration to take centre stage. At the same time, the visible natural wood adds warmth and calm, keeping the overall design beautifully balanced despite its vivid palette.

At 16.5 cm tall, this is one of Kawase's smaller formats, but its rounded body and weight of 350 g give it a surprisingly substantial and sculptural feel.

The underside bears handwritten numbers/markings, although their meaning could not be confirmed with certainty. There is no clear maker's signature present.
