Creative Kokeshi by Sumiya Kōji | 17.5 cm

This creative kokeshi by Sumiya Kōji (角屋 幸治) immediately stands out for its broad, dark-finished hairstyle and calm expression.

The wooden body is decorated with a rich floral design in shades of red, orange, cream and green. Parts of the motif are carved into the wood, adding depth and texture to the flowers. The contrast between the simple face and the colourful floral decoration gives this kokeshi its distinctive character.

A refined example of sōsaku kokeshi, where form, colour and woodcarving were freely combined.

The underside bears the artist's red maker's mark.
