Creative Kokeshi by Sato Kōson with Momiji Motif | 31 cm

This large creative kokeshi by Sato Kōson (佐藤香村) immediately stands out for its warm autumn palette and distinctive three-part silhouette.

The body is composed of rounded volumes in deep reddish-brown tones, decorated with large momiji – Japanese maple leaves in red, orange and golden yellow. The colours gently overlap, giving the surface an almost landscape-like autumn character.

Above them, the large black hairstyle creates a strong contrast with the warm natural wood of the face. Closed eyes, a tiny nose and delicate red mouth give the figure the gentle, friendly expression so characteristic of Kōson's work. A small rounded hair ornament at the top adds a playful finishing touch.

At 31 cm tall and weighing an impressive 1,226 g, this is a substantial and sculptural example. Its bold form and rich autumn decoration give it enough presence to stand beautifully as an individual interior object.

The underside bears the maker's marking 香村 – Kōson, together with red artist seals.

The motif of changing maple leaves, momiji, is closely associated in Japan with autumn and the beauty of the changing seasons.
