This vintage creative kokeshi by Sato Kōson (佐藤香村) has a warm, compact form and is decorated with a rich autumn motif of momiji – Japanese maple leaves.
The body is finished in deep reddish-brown tones, with painted leaves in red, orange and golden yellow. The overlapping areas of colour create a warm, almost painterly surface strongly associated with the Japanese autumn season.
The large black hairstyle creates a strong contrast with the natural wood of the face. Small closed eyes and a delicate red mouth give the figure a soft, friendly expression, while the rounded hair ornament at the top adds to its distinctive silhouette.
At 21.5 cm tall and weighing 590 g, this is a compact yet substantial example. Its rounded form and warm palette give the piece a particularly decorative character.
The underside bears the maker's marking 香村 – Kōson, together with red artist seals.
The changing maple leaf motif, momiji, is closely associated in Japan with autumn and the beauty of the changing seasons.
