Creative Kokeshi by Issetsu Kuribayashi | 19 cm

This creative kokeshi by Issetsu Kuribayashi (栗林一雪, 1924–2011) has a full, almost egg-shaped form and relates closely to one of his more slender designs featuring the same fan-shaped leaf motif.

The serene face with closed eyes is surrounded by muted grey-brown tones, while the body is decorated with distinctive fan-shaped leaf motifs in white, orange and green. The natural wood grain remains visible beneath the colour and gives the surface a warm, lively character.

Its compact, broad form gives this version a particularly strong presence. At 665 grams, it feels almost sculptural, while the rounded body allows the graphic decoration to flow beautifully across the surface.

Faint traces of a red maker's marking remain visible on the underside.
