Creative Kokeshi by Issetsu Kuribayashi | 18.5 cm

This creative kokeshi by Issetsu Kuribayashi (栗林一雪, 1924–2011) has an elegant elongated form and a particularly refined decoration. Its serene face almost blends into the warm tones of the wood, while the body is wrapped in a graphic pattern of stylised pine needles.

The combination of white, black and soft ochre creates a beautiful rhythm across the surface without hiding the natural wood grain. It is this balance between simple form and the expressive matsu motif that gives the piece its distinctive character.

Kuribayashi began creating kokeshi in 1955 and became an important figure within the sōsaku kokeshi movement. The underside bears his red 一雪 artist's seal.
