This creative Kokeshi bears the title "Tsubaki no Sato" (椿の里), which can be translated as "Camellia Village". The wooden name plaque reads 富山作, generally read as Tomiyama, meaning that the piece was made by Tomiyama (富山).
The Kokeshi has a warm, compact shape with beautiful natural wood grain visible in the rounded hairstyle. Her serene face, closed eyes and small red mouth give her a soft expression. The kimono is decorated with red camellias and green leaves over a deep reddish-brown base.
The camellia, or tsubaki, is a cherished motif in Japanese art and is often associated with elegance, winter blooming and quiet beauty. The underside and the back of the wooden plaque carry a later handwritten commemorative inscription dated 12 November 1996, adding history and character to this piece.
