This vintage Bizen sencha tea set by Kimura Tōhō (木村陶峰) consists of a handleless hōhin teapot, a yuzamashi water cooler and five matching teacups.
The set is made from warm reddish-brown Bizen clay, with fine horizontal throwing lines running across the surfaces. Yellow-green and olive-coloured areas appear on several pieces. These are known as goma (胡麻), a natural kiln effect created when wood ash settles and fuses onto the surface during firing. It is therefore not an applied glaze, but one of the characteristic surface effects of Bizen-yaki.
The restrained forms, rhythmic horizontal lines and natural variations created during firing give each piece its own character while keeping the seven-piece set visually coherent.
The set has been preserved unused and comes with its original wooden tomobako and accompanying Japanese documentation. The box is marked 胡麻焼 煎茶器揃, identifying it as a complete goma-yaki sencha tea set. The maker is Kimura Tōhō, associated with Tōshōen (陶正園) in Bizen and known particularly for tea ware, flower vessels and sake ware.
A particularly complete Bizen sencha set in which the warm earthy palette and natural kiln effects take centre stage.
