This expressive carved wooden mask represents Takeminakata-no-Mikoto (建御名方命) and was created by Tanabe Seiyū (田邊聖祐) within the tradition of Bitchū Kagura.

The mask has an exceptionally powerful presence. Strongly defined eyebrows, large gold-coloured eyes, prominent fangs and a broad mouth give the face an intense, almost explosive energy. Black, ivory, deep red, green and gold are set against one another in bold lines, emphasising the deeply carved forms.

Within Bitchū Kagura, Takeminakata appears in the Kuni-yuzuri, or "Transfer of the Land," episode. In this mythological scene he confronts the deities sent by the heavenly realm to claim the land ruled by Ōkuninushi. The character is therefore closely associated with strength, confrontation and determination.

Bitchū Kagura is a traditional form of kagura from the Bitchū region of Okayama. In 1979 it was designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan and its repertoire includes dramatic episodes based on Japanese mythology.

The reverse of the mask bears the carved maker's name 聖祐 – Seiyū.

The mask comes with its original cardboard box, marked 無形文化財 備中神楽面, together with an original Japanese information leaflet. The leaflet provides information about Bitchū Kagura and illustrates several mask types and characters from the tradition.

A striking sculptural object in which Japanese folk art, mythology and performance tradition come together.
