This creative kokeshi by Sekiguchi Tōa (関口東亜) bears the title "Izayoi" (十六夜), a poetic Japanese term referring to the moon of the sixteenth night.
Its compact rounded shape gives the piece an almost egg-like silhouette. The simple face is framed by deep black hair, while the body is designed like a richly decorated kimono in warm brown and gold tones, accented with red, white and yellow.
The decoration is particularly refined. Small stylised plant motifs and geometric patterns are scattered across the dark wood, while a softly shimmering band across the chest adds depth and contrast. Despite its modest size, the substantial weight of 764 grams gives the piece a surprisingly solid and sculptural presence.
This example has retained both its original box and wooden nameplate. The title 十六夜 – Izayoi appears on the accompanying original material, while the underside bears Sekiguchi Tōa's maker's marking.
A small but remarkably complete work in which Tōa's restrained form and decorative refinement come together beautifully.
