This traditional Kokeshi was crafted by Onodera Shōichi (小野寺正一), a Japanese artisan working within the Tōgatta tradition (遠刈田系) in the Miyagi region, one of the main centres of traditional Kokeshi production.
A classic and well-balanced piece within the Tōgatta tradition, with an immediately familiar and calming presence.
The slender shape and clear proportions give this Kokeshi a quiet strength, while the floral motifs add rhythm and character. The combination of red and black against the light wood keeps the design visually strong without becoming busy.
The face is soft and understated, with closed eyes and minimal expression — typical of this tradition, where simplicity and balance are key.
What makes this piece particularly appealing are the authentic details: the calligraphy on the back, the signed base with hanko, and the original side sticker. Together, they offer a rich sense of origin and history.
With its 30 cm height, this Kokeshi has a clear presence in a space without becoming dominant. It stands beautifully on its own or in combination with other pieces.
