About the maker – Kimura Tōhō (木村桃峰)
Kimura Tōhō worked in Bizen, one of Japan's oldest and most respected ceramic traditions. Bizen ware is known for its unglazed surfaces and long wood-firing processes, during which ash, flame and heat interact naturally with the clay.
Tōhō belonged to a generation of potters who upheld this demanding tradition with great technical skill, producing work intended for use rather than decoration. His pieces are characterised by balanced forms, controlled kiln effects and a quiet sense of restraint, qualities highly valued by collectors of authentic Japanese ceramics.
The presence of a maker's stamp on the underside and an original tomobako with calligraphy confirms that this is not an anonymous or later-assembled set, but an authentic work created and signed by the artist himself.
About the set
The pieces were fired using the traditional yakishime technique, in which unglazed clay is wood-fired over an extended period. During firing, ash settles on the surface, creating natural variations in colour, texture and pattern.
While each piece retains its own individuality, the set clearly forms a cohesive whole — a sign of thoughtful design and skilled craftsmanship.
The set is accompanied by:
its original wooden storage box (tomobako) with calligraphy
– inscription: "Shuki soroi" (sake set) and "Bizen – Tōhō"the original Japanese explanatory leaflet on Bizen pottery
a fitted interior, indicating that the set was originally sold as a complete ensemble
Why this piece holds its value
The value of this sake set does not rely on a single factor, but on the rare combination of:

a complete original set
clear maker's marks
original box and documentation
and a vintage Shōwa-period origin
Sets of this quality and completeness are increasingly difficult to find. They appeal to collectors and enthusiasts who value authenticity, craftsmanship and cultural depth over decorative trends.
